The first-ever kitesurfing competition in Playa Buen Hombre, DR Open 2024

What a truly unforgettable experience we had this past Sunday! We celebrated the first official kitesurfing event at Playa Buen Hombre: the DR Open 2024. From the electric atmosphere to the stunning performances on the water, every moment was thrilling!



The DR Open series, now in its 14th year, stands as an essential platform for both emerging talents and seasoned professionals. Sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and local businesses, this series allows participants to showcase their skills and make a name in the competitive kitesurfing world. This year's events spanned breathtaking locations, including Cabarete, Puerto Plata, and Las Terrenas, culminating at our very own Playa Buen Hombre. In a few weeks, the excitement continues with the next stop in Samana.

For anyone dreaming of kitesurfing or participating in high-energy events, the vibrant atmosphere was absolutely infectious. The beach buzzed with excitement as competitors and spectators gathered to celebrate this incredible sport.


An Action-Packed Day for Competitors and Spectators


The DR Open 2024 included various categories, showcasing a wide array of talent. From young novices to professional riders performing awe-inspiring tricks, there was something for everyone. The key categories included Junior, Nuevo Talento, Professional, Big Air, and Strapless.


One of the highlights was the impressive Junior category. Remarkably, the winner was a 12-year-old female rider named Victoria Bramtot from Cabarete. Her skills left the audience in awe! Finishing second was local rider Cesar Villaneuva, who impressed everyone with his first-ever competition. Completing the podium was 10-year-old Clark Stuhr, who learned to kitesurf in just four weeks under the guidance of local champion Miky (George Luis Guzman Castillo). His rapid rise in this sport is a true inspiration!

Big Air – The Thrill of High-Flying Action


A standout category was Big Air, renowned for its heart-stopping action and astounding tricks. Riders pushed their limits, soaring high and performing fantastic aerial maneuvers. The victor, Angel David Bonilla Zayas from Cabarete, displayed skill and daring, justifying his status in the kitesurfing community.


Not far behind was the runner-up, Miguelange Rodriguez, who executed his own impressive feats. The intensity of the competition created some unforgettable moments, keeping the spectators at the edge of their seats. Witnessing the talent from the regional kitesurfing scene highlights the need to support local athletes as they pursue opportunities on bigger stages.

The competition has a few different categories like Junior, Nuevo Talento, professional, Big Air, and Strapless. The young talent and Junior category was won by 12-year-old young female talent Victoria Bramtot from Cabarete, local Kite Buen Hombre rider Cesar Villaneuva as a first-time competing talent came second, and only 10 years Clark Stuhr from Florida who learned kite surfing in the last 4 weeks with the Kite Buen Hombre well renown instructor and champion Miky (George Luis Guzman Castillo) right on the Buen Hombre beach was recognized as the third upcoming talent.


The Pro BIG AIR category winner is an original rider from Cabarete but for the last 1.5 practicing in Buen Hombre as a sponsored rider by VENTUM KITEBOARDING from the Netherlands and Kite Buen Hombre from Buen Hombre.
